In 2004, Connie Culp was shot by her husband. The blast horribly disfigured her face, leaving her with nothing but a forehead, chin, lower lip and upper eyelids.
She couldn't eat, breath on her own, smell or taste.
For years, she fought for her life and for her face. After 5 years and over 30 surgeries, she has someone else's face.
She was the recipient of most extensive face transplant in the world and the first in the US. There have only be three previously.
Her words are stunning, and a good reminder to all of us, that beauty really isn't our face. Its so much more.
"When somebody has a disfigurement and don't look as pretty as you do, don't judge them, because you never know what happened to them," Culp said. "Don't judge people who don't look the same as you do. Because you never know. One day it might be all taken away."
