I've recently become very interested in becoming a published writer- it's always been something that has been a dream of mine, but as I grow older, I realize it is a goal that is easily attainable, even at my young age.  I've had essays published on various websites and a few small time publications and I've had some poetry published as well, but nothing that I'd consider a major accomplishment.  Continuously I sent my work to The New Yorker and got nowhere, but that never stopped me.   I came across this website, Lulu.com, that self-publishes authors.  I decided I'd take a stab at it and make myself my own small book of poems.  And I did just that.  Now not only can people buy my published book online at the website, but they will also be able to see it on Amazon.com in a few weeks!  It's such an exciting achievement for me and I can't believe this has actually happened.

Not only that, but if you google my name, my book pops up, Skipping Rocks (A Poet's Declaration to the World)

Check it out here:

Hey! That's great! You know, my dad tried to turn me on to Lulu--it's really been growing in the past 5 years.

I just wanted to pass along another tidbit I recently picked up from an editor at a magazine: nearly 80% of magazines utilize freelance writers to fill out their magazines, many of these 'zines with a large national circulation--think 30,000 and up. If you don't feel like going to pick up a copy of Writer's Digest, you can go to wordhustler.com, and this site offers guidelines and types of copy that different publishers solicit. What you usually do is send a query--just your idea for a story and a little blurb of what will be in it. While the site offers a subscritpion, you don't have to enroll in it--it's free to look at guidelines and stuff. Check it out--it's your next step to getting out there!

And MANY MANY CONGRATULATIONS! I THINK THAT'S REALLY SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE!!!!

Congrats! Lulu looks really cool. I've written a couple children's books (just for my nieces) and would love to publish one or two! Congrats!

Hey, Faith, I've got this kind of special project I'm working on and I had this idea to kind of get the perspective of professionals in the field....and since you've got publishing experience with Lulu, you're actually perfect to interview. Maybe you could email me at your convenience and let me know if you're interested...I can give you the details when you get in touch. Thanks!
